How Magical Thinking Can Save You

Sometimes you need to believe in something

When we were children it was easy to believe in magical things. The world was an exciting place, and anything could happen. Fairies, monsters, ghosts, leprechauns — all these magical beings made life a lot more fun.

Then we became adults. Some of us believe in God, others don’t. But I think the world is truly a depressing place if you don’t believe in something. Why strive for anything if you believe life is a struggle and just ends, and that’s it? In fact, magical thinking can help us out when times are stressful. It’s often helped me.

An answered prayer

Years ago, my family was broke. The money wasn’t coming in, and we had four children to feed. We were eating unhealthy canned food all the time. That’s all we could afford. We hadn’t seen a fresh piece of fruit or fresh vegetables in ages.

As I looked in the empty refrigerator, I prayed. “Please God, send us some food.”

And then my parents stopped in a couple of days later. They had just returned from driving back from Florida and had no idea about the food struggle we were going through. They carried in a huge box and laid it on the kitchen table. “We brought you back something.”
